Fun to CourseDesign

Everything you need to know about creating fun, fluent, flowy, and safe course designs.

Are you interested in course design?

Maybe you want to practice creating your own original training courses, or you just want to play with the lines and better understand how to read an agility course correctly. If that’s you, then this class is exactly where you need to be.

I’m bringing all my experience from the ring straight to you. We’ll look at the sport through the eyes of a judge, but with the heart of a competitor. I’ll show you how to build courses that actually challenge our minds while making sure the lines make sense for the bodies of our four-legged team members. These are the “insider” tips, the small tweaks I look for as an international judge to make a course safe and fluent.

The Roadmap

Chapter 1: The Invisible Lines – Foundations of Course Design We begin with the core of everything: the lines. After a quick look at my journey and the SmarterAgility tool, we dive into why lines matter and the crucial difference between center-to-center measuring and the true dog’s path. You’ll learn about take-off and landing points and the “Feel It” method for adjusting your work, ending with a quiz and your first Creative Session.

Chapter 2: The 3 F’s – Fun to Run, Fun to Watch, Fun to Judge This is where we get practical. We’ll cover the “Golden Rule” of 6 meters, how to handle straight approaches to specialized obstacles, and the art of shaping tunnels. We’ll explore how to design smart traps and layering that works, ensuring your courses offer great handling options while remaining fair and judge-friendly.

Chapter 3: Rhythm, Balance & Harmony – The Art of Flow Course design is an art form. In this chapter, we define what rhythm and harmony actually mean in the ring. We’ll look at real-world examples of courses that lack these elements so you can see exactly how to fix them, followed by a creative session to help you find your own flow.

Chapter 4: From Theory to Mastery – Practice, Classes & Real Courses We wrap up with real-world application. You’ll learn how to design around obstacles like poles or trees and how to make the most of small spaces. We’ll discuss the different philosophies behind A1, A2, and A3 classes before I walk you through a full breakdown of three of my recent competition courses. You’ll finish with a final big challenge to test everything you’ve learned.
